Mystery Science earns unusually consistent praise across these reviews as an open-and-go, secular, standards-aligned elementary science program built around question-driven videos ('what's the smallest animal on earth?') paired with hands-on activities, printables, and assessments. The engagement factor is the recurring headline: one mom reports her kids finish the required weekly video and immediately beg, 'can we do more?'; another family keeps it going year after year as an extra they genuinely enjoy. A reviewer who compared ten online science programs side by side picked Mystery Science as her overall winner, citing interesting videos, cool mini lessons, and simple parent prep. Another, who used the similar Generation Genius for a full year before switching, prefers Mystery Science for its larger lesson library, more in-depth and interactive video format, and better long-term value for the money — roughly $109-119 per year, with free trials available. A former teacher highlights that units are organized by age range rather than grade, which suits families combining kids of different ages, and that the mini lessons make it easy to follow rabbit holes or do quick seasonal topics. The limits are clear and shared: it's elementary-only (roughly K-5), so kids age out by middle school — one reviewer is already hunting for what comes next for her oldest — and because it's designed with classrooms in mind, a few pieces like the pacing guides read more teacher-than-homeschool-parent friendly. Families also vary in how they use it: some run it as their full science curriculum, others as a flexible supplement off the schedule.
Synthesized from 5 independent video reviews — every claim sourced from what real homeschool parents said on camera.
Secular or standards-minded families with elementary kids (roughly K-5) who want an engaging, open-and-go video-based science program that works for combining multiple ages.
Families with middle or high schoolers, those wanting a faith-based science program, or anyone who needs a curriculum that extends beyond the elementary years.
GENERATION GENIUS VERSUS MYSTERY SCIENCE | Comparison From Personal Use Secular Homeschool Science Generation Genius Versus Mystery Science UPDATE: Generation Genius no longer offers a homeschool option. This has been one of my most requested video topics. We used @GenerationGenius for our homeschool science last year and are using @MysterySci this year. We did decide to switch away from Generation Genius. It was really the preference of my girls and they have yet to regret their decision. Generation Genius is amazing but that didn't make it a perfect fit for us. You really can not go wrong with either program. We have used and enjoyed both. right now, Mystery Science is a better fit for my girls. Reviewers place it at kindergarten through fifth grade, with units organized by age range rather than strict grade levels — which one reviewer especially likes for teaching kids of different ages together. The flip side comes up twice: kids age out by middle school, and one family that loves it is already searching for a separate middle school program for their oldest.
Reviewers cite roughly $109 per year for a homeschool membership (one quotes about $119 for a full school year), which covers access to all the materials on the website. Free trials are available — one reviewer notes you can try it for the remainder of the school year with just your email address.
Yes. Reviewers describe it as secular and standards-aligned, and it appears in multiple roundups and curriculum lineups aimed specifically at secular homeschooling families.
Reviewers consistently say yes: lessons pair a video with hands-on activities and printables, supply lists are easy to find, prep instructions are included, and the print interface scales easily from a classroom of 30 down to a homeschool. The one caveat is that the pacing guides are written more for teachers than homeschool parents.
Both, depending on the family. Reviewers describe a full elementary science curriculum with assessments, and one chose it as her family's formal science program. Others use it more loosely — one family keeps it off the official schedule and dips into lessons that match their other studies or seasonal topics like Halloween and Christmas.
One reviewer used Generation Genius for a year, then switched to Mystery Science and compared them directly. Both are video-based, standards-aligned programs she'd recommend, and Generation Genius has flashier production. But she found Mystery Science more in-depth and interactive — videos pause for questions and activities — with many more lessons plus mini lessons, making it more sustainable long-term and a bit more value for the buck.
