Across these reviews Saxon is the archetypal traditional, rigorous homeschool math: a spiral program where each lesson teaches one new increment and then drills a long mixed-practice review of everything taught so far. Reviewers consistently credit it with being thorough — daily speed drills and mental math build fact fluency, the multi-step word problems are excellent, and it has a reputation as one of the more advanced options. Older kids who read well can largely run it themselves, and families who want instruction handled lean on video supplements like Nicole the Math Lady or the DIVE CDs.
The disagreements are about fit, not quality. Two reviewers pulled a child off Saxon: one because the incremental, split-across-lessons teaching left her daughter forgetting earlier pieces and stretching math to two hours a day, another because memory gaps proved really difficult to fill in with a spiral format once the family realized they were mastery learners. A third mom kept her twin boys happily in Saxon 54 — she loves the concepts — while moving her daughter, who found it cold and stale, to a computer-based program; she also calls Saxon high maintenance for the parent, with daily printing, grading, and recording. The plain black-and-white pages are a recurring theme: fine for some kids, a deal-breaker for those who need color, visuals, or the conceptual why behind the math, which one reviewer notes Saxon does not teach. On the positive end, one family switched *to* Saxon after a failed year with an online program and praises how it makes their son write out complete answers and work independently.
Synthesized from 7 independent video reviews — every claim sourced from what real homeschool parents said on camera.
A family that wants a rigorous, traditional, no-frills spiral program with constant built-in review, especially for a kid who thrives on repetition and can work through a textbook lesson independently.
Kids who need colorful, visual, conceptual, or mastery-style instruction — several reviewers watched exactly that kind of child stall out, melt down, or get bored with Saxon's black-and-white drill format.

Math-U-See Explained, Flip-Through & Review - 1st, 2nd & 3rd Grade Math Curriculum For my side-by-side comparison of MUS with a Saxon lesson: https://youtu.be/kgNt5s1mfLg If you are as unsure as I was about the real differences between a spiral math approach and a mastery math approach, I use MathUSee to walk you through it and explain the whole thing. Plus, I give a review and flip through of Alpha, Beta and Gamma MathUSee homeschool curricula. #homeschooling #homeschoolmath #maths #math #1stgrade #2ndgrade #3rdgrade Some people will claim either spiral or mastery is "better" but what does that mean? It's really about how your kid learns. Each learning approach is great, they just work differently for different kids (and adults!) I hope you find this video useful as you begin your search for math curricula for the next school year. Thanks for watching!
WE’RE QUITTING TEACHING TEXTBOOKS to address an issue that left me speechless! We've been using Teaching Textbooks for a year and a half for my 12 year old. We switched to have another teacher help my daughter understand the math lessons, since when we had used Singapore, she and I were struggling. It seemed to be working great! But then this past semester, I started to have concerns. And those concerns led me down a rabbit trail of "investigation" that I never expected. I started out innocently considering other math curriculums, and then I found out something completely out of left field. What happened???? EPSON ECO-TANK PRINTER: I've printed more than 1,000 pages this summer and that ink tank has barely budged!!!!! https://amzn.to/43Dp9V6 CHAPTERS: 00:32 What is our experience with Teaching Textbooks? Why was it "working?" 02:04 Why did I begin to question if this was a good fit for us? 03:59 Curious, I began looking, JUST TO SEE if there was a better fit. We did a placement test from The Good and the Beautiful Math. 06:24 Is this the curriculum's issue? 07:34 What does she need to learn? Do we really need to repeat EVERYTHING??? 09:25 As were figuring out our strategy....here's what I didn't expect to discover. 10:42 So, what now? Where do we go from here? Spiral. Reviewers describe each lesson as teaching one new concept incrementally, followed by a large mixed-practice review (around 30 problems in the middle levels) that cycles back through everything previously taught. Parents of mastery-style learners reported that this format made memory gaps hard to fill, and two of them ultimately switched those kids to mastery programs.
No. One reviewer who used Saxon 65 and 76 states plainly that Saxon is not Common Core aligned — she describes it as a traditional, spiral mathematics program.
Not built into the books, but reviewers pair it with video supplements. One mom credits Nicole the Math Lady with making the lessons fun and engaging, another highly recommends the DIVE CDs for parents who don't feel comfortable teaching upper-level concepts, and a third received an instructional DVD with her set. One reviewer notes there are many video platforms you can use with Saxon.
Often, yes — reviewers call it independent and student-led. One mom's seventh grader reads the lesson himself and rarely needs help, and another needed exactly that independence while teaching younger siblings. The parent side still takes work, though: one reviewer calls it a high-maintenance program because you print, grade, record, and file everything yourself.
Many Saxon families do only the evens or the odds, but one reviewer warns the program is designed for you to do all the problems — skipping half can mean a concept goes unreviewed that day, and she saw her daughter start forgetting concepts as a result.
It grows with the level. One reviewer found that by Saxon 76 — with the speed drill, mental math, lesson practice, and mixed practice — her daughter was sometimes doing math for two hours a day, since the multi-step problems each take real time.
It depends heavily on the kid. The pages are black and white with no color, and reviewers describe it as cold, stale, or 'rote math drills' for children who need visual, interactive learning. But the same format works well for kids who like routine and repetition — one reviewer says there's a ton of kids who thrive on Saxon.
