All About Reading Reviews: What Homeschool Families Actually Say

By All About Learning Press, Inc.·Reading · Language Arts · Phonics

10 video reviews: 10 positive

All ten reviewers in this set recommend All About Reading — an unusually unanimous verdict — but they are equally unanimous that it is a parent-led program, not an independent one. The pattern that comes up again and again: fully scripted, open-and-go lessons in the teacher's manual, paired with hands-on work every day — letter tiles, flashcard games, and cut-out activities that keep wiggly kids engaged. One reviewer whose daughter has dyslexia values that it is Orton-Gillingham based and builds incrementally; another credits level 3 with finally solidifying a third grader's shaky fluency after a different curriculum wasn't working. The hardbound, full-color readers draw repeated praise as genuinely engaging, though one reviewer dissents, finding the stories ask a lot of maturity from young readers. The recurring cost of admission is parent time: reviewers describe sitting one-on-one for 20–30 minutes a day, plus real prep — cutting out activity book pieces and organizing cards, which several manage by prepping lessons in batches or whole books in advance. Many offset the price (roughly $165–$200 for a level with tiles) by copying or binder-protecting the activity book to reuse with younger siblings. Levels run by skill, not grade — reviewers stress using the placement test — and the pre-reading level is squarely preschool material with a puppet kids love, possibly too easy for a child who already knows letters. Families consistently describe kids progressing at their own pace, with some finishing after level 2 and others running through all four levels.

Synthesized from 10 independent video reviews — every claim sourced from what real homeschool parents said on camera.

A good fit if…

Families who can sit one-on-one for 20-30 minutes a day and want a scripted, hands-on, mastery-paced phonics program — including kids who struggle with decoding or have dyslexia, and households teaching multiple children.

Probably skip if…

Families who need a low-prep, independent-work curriculum, or whose child is already reading fluently and doesn't need explicit incremental phonics instruction.

Homeschool Reading Curriculum: All About Reading Level 2 Review This year we needed a separate, stand-alone, learn-to-read program for my daughter. She's a very bright kid, but struggles with decoding (sounding out) and spelling phonetically. We landed on All About Reading and couldn't be happier. This program delivers consistent, engaging, multisensory instruction for learning to read. I would recommend it to families (especially families with multiple kids) who need a separate phonics program that will give your child a solid base in phonics and develop their fluency and spelling skills. Full disclosure, we received this program free of charge in exchange for a fair and honest review. PositiveHomeschool In The Pines

In their words

it is orton gillingham based so it's a research structured phonics instruction that builds incrementally and it's great for kids like my daughter who has dyslexia

if you have one or two two Learners and you got a little bit of time maybe 20 30 minutes a day and you can sit with with your learner and do the activities do the do the work this is a great curriculum for you

The only problem with this is that you have a lot to prep beforehand. And I always do the whole book before we even start it. So, I try to prep this stuff months in advance.

all about reading has a reputation for having very amusing and engaging um readers and they definitely deserve that reputation

I don't actually love the readers that come along with this. I think that they are asking a lot of maturity to be reading such long stories with such young children

We ended up switching to all about reading level three and we went through all of that this year. This was a fantastic um choice for her. It really solidified her reading and her phonics and she really managed to master that.

Common questions

Is All About Reading good for kids with dyslexia?+

One reviewer chose level 2 specifically for her second grader with a dyslexia diagnosis. She values that it is Orton-Gillingham based — structured phonics instruction that builds incrementally — with consistent daily lessons, hands-on tile work, and sight-word card games that directly improved her daughter's decoding and fluency.

How much does All About Reading cost?+

A reviewer of level 1 cites about $165 for the base set, roughly $25 more for the magnetic letter tiles (or about a $20 letter-tile app), putting the whole setup near $200. Several reviewers offset the cost by photocopying or binder-protecting the activity book so it can be reused with younger siblings or resold.

Do All About Reading levels match grade levels?+

No. Reviewers stress that level 2 does not mean second grade — you place your child by skill using the publisher's placement test. One family did levels 1-4 across kindergarten and first grade; another used levels 3 and 4 in third grade to shore up fluency.

Is All About Reading open-and-go or prep-heavy?+

Both, according to reviewers. The teacher's manual is fully scripted and easy to teach from, but the activity book requires cutting out game pieces and organizing word cards. Reviewers recommend prepping a few lessons at a time before the school day — one preps the entire book months in advance.

Is All About Reading secular or religious?+

One reviewer describes it as faith neutral: the company itself is religious, but she found no mention of God in the material across two levels. Several self-described secular and eclectic homeschool families in this set use it as their core reading program.

Do you need to complete all four levels?+

It depends on the child. One reviewer stopped after level 2 because her son already knew most of the level 3 phonograms and was taking off into real books, while another family continued through levels 3 and 4 and credits them with making their daughter's reading fluent. Reviewers suggest checking the scope and sequence and your own confidence teaching phonics.

How long does an All About Reading lesson take?+

Reviewers describe about 20-30 minutes of one-on-one time daily. Lessons are designed to be split — some kids do one lesson a day, others spread one lesson over several days. The pre-reading level is explicitly time-based: teach for 20 minutes and stop, rather than pushing to finish a lesson.
