The Story of the World Reviews: What Homeschool Families Actually Say

By Well-Trained Mind Press·History · Social Studies

36 video reviews: 28 positive · 6 mixed · 1 critical

Across 35 reviews, The Story of the World is one of the most consistently praised homeschool history programs — and one of the most argued-about. Nearly every reviewer, including those who eventually left it, compliments Susan Wise Bauer's narrative writing: history told as a story rather than a textbook, which keeps kids asking for another chapter and helps the material stick years later. Three practical strengths come up again and again: it teaches multiple ages at once (a preschooler colors while a middle schooler outlines), the audiobook carries car rides and read-aloud-weary days, and the activity guide — review questions, narrations, maps, coloring pages, projects, and book lists — is what several veterans call the real key. More than one warns that families who buy only the reader come away disappointed.

The disagreements are just as consistent. The worldview satisfies neither end of the spectrum: secular reviewers point to Christian framing in Volumes 1–2, while several Christian reviewers want more Bible and less mythology — one rejected the program over it, and one secular mom switched to History Quest. Practical gripes recur too: 42 chapters don't fit a 36-week year, the activity book's layout is bulky enough that many owners cut and rebind it, myths and fictional characters can blur into real history for young listeners, and big topics get a single chapter, so depth-seekers supplement or pause for unit studies.

The pattern is clear: families who treat it as a flexible spine, pick activities selectively, and ride the four-year cycle tend to love it. Families wanting depth, strict worldview alignment, or open-and-go simplicity tend to drift away.

Synthesized from 36 independent video reviews — every claim sourced from what real homeschool parents said on camera.

A good fit if…

Families who want an affordable, story-driven world history read-aloud they can teach to several elementary-to-middle-school kids at once.

Probably skip if…

Strictly secular or Bible-centered families, and anyone who wants a deep, open-and-go program rather than a flexible spine to customize.

The Story of the World History Curriculum Review Hi friends! As most of you know we’re trying out a new history curriculum this year. So today I’ll be sharing our review of the Story of the World homeschool history curriculum. The Story of the World is a classical based curriculum written by Susan Wise Bauer. It is considered a read-aloud style curriculum meant to be used with elementary students. But you can also use it with grades 5-8 as an independent study as well. ------ VISIT MY BLOG POST for more info! ------ http://bit.ly/2yD5MS2 ------ Get the Story of the World Here ------ http://amzn.to/2g9TIQG ------ FIND ME HERE ------ Email me: erica@confessionsofahomeschooler.com eCourses: http://go.confessionsofahomeschooler.com Website: http://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com Store: http://store.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ericaarndt/ YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/EricasHomeschool Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ConfessionsofaHomeschooler Twitter: http://twitter.com/ericahomeschool Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/ericahomeschool ------ ------ ------ Disclosure: This is not a sponsored post, however I am an affiliate for Amazon and some links above may be affiliate links. REVIEW OF STORY OF THE WORLD HISTORY WHAT CHRISTIANS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IT Today I am sharing my review on Story of the World History by Susan Bauer. I am sharing the pros and cons/concerns others have shared with me. One major concern I have heard time and time again is those who question if Story of the world is a Christian history and should they use it with their kids. So today I am sharing my thoughts on that topic in hopes it will help you decide. The Story of the World History Curriculum Review Last school year we used The Story of the World history curriculum and loved it! We spent 13 months going through all four volumes and I'm so glad we tried that approach. My kids were able to see the connections of various events and would often bring up situations in our discussions that reminded them of other instances throughout history. Here's a link if you would like to see what we used for our history curriculum our first year of homeschooling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54uxxbiA8Pk&t=33s Follow me on Twitter and Instagram! https://twitter.com/pondoctomus https://www.instagram.com/pondoctomus/?hl=en

Story of the World | Homeschool Curriculum Review Story of the World was the first history curriculum we purchased years ago when our homeschool journey was just starting out. While we enjoyed it for a couple years, we quickly realized that it wasn't going to be the direction we wished to go in. Since then, I've given away all of our STOW curriculum except the audio CDs. And while we haven't listened to the CDs in years, we still would like to keep them and refer to them during our unit studies. This history curriculum has its merits. It's easy to read, complete and perfect for elementary school. There are four volumes in this series that cover from Ancient Times to Modern History. The curriculum comes with four books, CDs, Student Pages, Activity Book and Test manual with answer keys. And while they are a quick informative read, there is a lot of information that isn't covered in detail making it a good foundation to build on but not complete. Since we wanted to approach history in a slower deeper manner rather than the four year cycles of that typify the Classical Education model, we stopped using this curriculum and went headlong into our Waldorf curriculum. UnclearDeeply Rooted Home

In their words

a pro for story of the world is that the writing style is highly praised that's something that everyone really agrees on it is just a really well-written program

the people who didn't have the greatest experience with it actually only used just this just the read aloud but i would never pick this as my favorite or even use it if this is all i used the key to this being an excellent curriculum is this bad boy right here which is the activity book

it has worked out wonderful for me to teach my three older kids all at once because for instance when my older three were in first third and fourth grade I was able to do volume one and it was very appropriate for each of them

we absolutely love these and i highly highly recommend that if you're going to be doing this study that you get the cds whether you listen to them all the time or whether you just have them for times when you don't want to read

however when it comes to christianity there is a line that is crossed in which these conversations between men and god become presented as facts

There's a lot of mythology and other religions and it's the focus was too heavy on that. I felt like there was too much of that for me and I'd have to be editing out a lot

Several note the activity pages skew young (coloring-heavy), while Volumes 3–4 add harder maps, outlining, and writing that stretch into middle school.

Is The Story of the World secular or Christian?+

Most reviewers call it neutral — it presents religions, including Christianity, as part of history without endorsing them, and starts with nomads rather than creation. But it's contested from both sides: secular reviewers report Christian framing in Volumes 1–2 (one cites the Clovis chapter presenting a pact with God as fact), while several Christian reviewers wish it had more Bible and less mythology. One reviewer jokes that asking whether it's secular is the fastest way to start a fight in a homeschool group.

Do I need the activity book, or is the reader enough?+

Multiple veteran users say the activity book is the key to the program — one calls it the heart and soul, and two separately say families who only bought the reader were disappointed. It contains review questions, narration exercises, map work, coloring pages, project ideas, and additional reading lists. The reader alone works as a pure read-aloud, but reviewers agree you get far more with the guide.

Is there an audiobook version?+

Yes — every volume has a word-for-word audio version narrated by Jim Weiss, sold on CD and available through some libraries (including Hoopla). Many reviewers call the CDs a top feature for car schooling, review, and resting a read-aloud-weary voice, and say the narrator handles difficult ancient names well. A couple of families disliked his storytelling cadence, so sample it first.

How long does one volume take?+

Each volume has about 42 chapters, which several reviewers note doesn't map neatly onto a 36-week school year. The standard pace is one volume per year over a four-year chronological cycle (ancients, medieval, early modern, modern), then repeating the cycle at greater depth. In practice families adapt: some do three chapters every two weeks, one family stretched a volume over two years, and one read all four volumes aloud in about thirteen months.

Can I use it with multiple kids at different levels?+

This is one of its most-praised strengths. Reviewers taught preschoolers through 8th graders from the same chapter: littles listen and color, mid-elementary kids do maps and review questions, and olders add quizzes, outlines, or writing. The student pages may be photocopied within your own family, and several moms of four to six kids ran it as their whole-family history.

How much does it cost?+

Reviewers consistently call it affordable. One bought used sets for about $20–25 per volume — roughly $100 for all four years — and another listed publisher prices of about $60–65 for a full volume bundle, $27–29 for activity guides, $12–14 for student pages, $9–10 for test books, and $25–35 per audiobook volume. Because it has been in print so long, used copies are easy to find and libraries often carry the texts and audio.

Does Volume 4 cover recent history?+

Not very recent. Reviewers note Volume 4 ends around 1994 (the end of the USSR / first Gulf War era), with only a short afterword explaining why 9/11 was treated as current events rather than history when the book was written in 2005. A couple of reviewers wish it extended further, and one mentions a 25th-anniversary update in the works.
